The beautiful city of Budapest only came into existence in 1873 when the two districts of Buda and Pest were amalgamated. The first settlement was built by the Romans. Buda on the otherhand was an important centre of Renaissance learning in the 16th century, however it fell into subsequent decline during the Turkish reign. A legacy fo the Turks were their thermal baths which are a must on a Budapest Holiday. Budapest underwent a huge transformation during the Hapsburg era and once it had negotiated virtual autonomy in 1867 it began to flourish both commercially and as a place to spend some time on a Budapest Holiday. By the 1900 Budapest has become one of Europes great cities with a thriving cultural lifestyle that can still be seen today if on a holiday in Budapest.
