Matthias Church Budapest
Budapests Matthias Church is known in Hungary as the Matyas-templom. It was the original place of worship for the German Burghers and was built as a dedication to the Blessed Virgin In Buda. The church gets its name from the Hungary King Matyas 1458-1490 who married here twice. The interior is dazzling, the result of extensive renovations in hte late 19th century. There are a range of beautiful florar motifs on its wall with geometric patterns. The church was later turned into a mosque and later in its history it was turned into a baroque church.
The main aim of the restoration of St Matthias was to restore it to its original condition. The high spire is nothing short of spectacular and stands at over 80 metres tall and commands a towering presence over this side of Budapest city.
By the main altar hands the coat of arms of King Matthias, and if you enter the church by the Mary Portal you can see a relief depicting the death fo the Virgin. The tombs of the 12th Century King Bela III and his wife are also found near the main door to the church and there is a truly impressive colleciton of ecclesastical art on display in the two oratories. This is a great Budapest place of interest and should be seen by all those who visit Budapest.
